Nicholasville is a small town in Kentucky that was founded in 1817. It is located in the Letcher County area, about 15 miles southeast of Lexington. The population was 1,553 at the 2010 census. Nicholasville is named after Nicholas French, an early settler who donated land for the town. The first schools in Nicholasville were built by settlers and teachers from nearby Somerset and Fayette counties. In 1853, the school board voted to name the new high school "Kentucky State Normal School" in honor of then-Governor John Sevier's donation of $5,000 to support education in Kentucky. The Normal School operated until 1955 when it became part of Transylvania University and remains there today as one of its many faculties. The Town Hall building was erected on Main Street in 1881 and has been used as a library, restaurant and office since then. It now houses the Nicholasville Historical Museum which contains items from both old Nicholasville and current day Nicholasville. Also on Main Street are two other buildings: one originally built as a Methodist church (now known as Second Baptist Church) and the other original home of Judge J B Goode Wagoner which served as both court house and jail during the late 1800s before becoming a museum storefront entirely dedicated to local history between 2003-2018 In 2017, a new wing was added to this museum which features over 100 unique artifacts found throughout central & eastern KY including rare maps/photos/etc., locomotive parts & more!
