This event is sometimes considered to be the beginning of the end for Confederate Counties east of Cincinnati due to this military action (and consequent loss of food). However, many historians believe that this battle actually helped feed Union forces as they marched southward through central Kentucky towards Louisville after routing Confederate forces at Perrysburg . The first settlers to Nicholasville were squatters who arrived in 1821 from Deerfield, Illinois. They erected a cabin on the current site of Knoxville in 1825 and named it after Nicholas I of Russia. The community grew quickly because of its location on the Cumberland River near the then-Route 66 corridor. By 1830, there were 10 white households and 21 black households in Nicholasville; by 1835, there were 100 white and 182 black households. In 1847, Nicholasville became one of two towns chartered by General James Ketchum as a new seat for Clark County; it was renamed for President George Washington after he visited that year. In 1850,Nicholasville had 2 taverns and 9 stores; by 1860, it had 24 taverns and 95 stores. By 1870,Nicholasville's population had reached 1,500 residents and it boasted over 100 schools (of which only 6 were schoolhouses). A cotton gin was built in 1861 to produce yarn for local markets; this facility soon became known as "The Grit." In 1865-66, Nicholasville hosted the Union Pacific Railroad's inaugural transcontinental railway bridge crossing over the Cumberland River; construction began but stopped due to lack of funds. In 1870-71,"the greatinent storekeeper" Jno Wray established a grocery store at what is now Main Street south of US 36W just east of exit 4A off I-65 Southwestern Boulevard." Wray served as mayor from 1886 until his death in 1898; he also served as an advisory member to both state legislatures from 1888 to 1890 and 1896 to 1899 before his death at age 91 years old. During Wray's tenure as mayor (1886-98), Nicholsvillians voted him into office twice – once with 58% majorities against all candidates opposed by other political parties during an election season when voting procedures were not always fair or regularized within Clarks County governmental boundaries under Kentucky law at that time - making him one of only three people ever elected Mayor of NicholasVILLE without any prior experience or qualifications whatsoever! He remains oneofKentucky history’s most prominent early mayors – even if many people today don't really remember much about him beyond his mayoral term(s).
