In 1861, Nicholasville was founded by the parents of Major General George B. McClellan in order to provide a military post for their son. The town grew rapidly and soon became known as the "City on the Hill" for its location atop a hill that afforded great views of surrounding countryside. One of McClellan's first tasks as Mayor was to establish a pepper spray manufacturing plant in order to furnish the town with an effective defense against raiders and outlaws. In 1878, pepper spray sales reached $2,000 per month and by 1890, the company had produced over 100,000 cans of pepper spray. Today, Nicholasville is home to one of the largest pepper spray production plants in the country and continues to be a major player in this significant industry.

Nicholasville is a small town in Hardin County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville–Jefferson County Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to settle in Nicholasville were the Capps and their families who arrived from Maryland in 1815. They built a log cabin on the north side of Nicholasville Creek. A second cabin was erected by them and known as "the Old Cabin". This location became known as "Capps' Corner" because Major General James Capps (1797-1857) married Esther Jane dePreston there on February 12, 1821. The first store in Nicholasville was established by John Pritchard and his brother George Pritchard on October 25, 1830. Nicholasville began to grow rapidly when it became the seat of Hardin County in 1836 when Judge Moses Swayne moved his court from Paducah to this community. By 1840, Nicholasville had a schoolhouse and two stores. In 1846, a post office was established here and remained in operation until 1865 when it was replaced by the present one. The population of Nicholasville swelled during World War II due to the influx of soldiers barracks stationed here during World War II. After the war ended, many residents left for various reasons including money troubles within Hardin County or other parts of Kentucky or Tennessee; however most returned within a few years after hard work rebuilding their lives back home in Nicholasville proper or nearby communities such as Jasper Hill and New Albany before they too lost touch with friends and family back home again over time until recently even some still maintain occasional visits back home now that all those years have passed since then LOL! Many businesses remain open today including one restaurant which continues to serve up great food despite not being around for very long past its original opening date but interestingly that business actually started out as an old general store which did quite well until it closed down around 2006 so who knows what might have happened if it hadn't been taken over by this new restaurant LOL!

In 1908, Nicholasville became a city through an act of Congress and experienced rapid growth during World War I. However, post-war prosperity slowed down until the early 21st century when Mayor Rick Van Meter led a citywide effort to revitalize downtown Nicholasville with new streetscape architecture and attractions. Today, Nickville is known for its Bourbon Distillery product line as well as its rich history and culture

It became an important center for trade and transportation during the 19th century. In 1848, Nicholasville was renamed Lexington because of its proximity to that city.
