Nicholasville, Kentucky is a small town located in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The population was 4,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville metropolitan area. In 1892, Nicholasville was founded as a farming community by George H. Nichols and his family. The Nichols family continued to operate a farm until 1951 when they sold it to Carlisle Air Force Base trustees for $2 million dollars. The base closed in 1992 and the property reverted back to Nicholasville residents. In 2000, Nicholasville became home to the world's first high capacity conversion nuclear power plant which was built by Southern Coducers Energy Company (SoCE) in partnership with Westinghouse Electric Corporation (WEC). SoCE is also responsible for developing and operating the plant that produces 1,000 MWe of electricity from two sodium-cooled reactors using natural gas cooled turbines. By 1920, Nicholasville had become an important community on the main rail line between Louisville and Nashville.
