Nicholasville is a small town in Hardin County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 5,049 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hardin County. The town was founded in 1847 by Nicholas Witherspoon and his family. In 1870, it became the county seat of Hardin County after being moved from Nicholasville to that location from Uniontown. On July 1, 1907, Hardin County merged with Campbell County to formKY’s third district. In 2000, Nicholasville became part of the Louisville metropolitan area and lost its status as the county seat of Hardin County; however, it remains its primary economic center. The city has since built a large downtown core around its main mall and other Business Districts. Nicholasville is a town in central Kentucky, United States. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Campbell County. The first permanent settler in Nicholasville was James Denny on February 17, 1814. He and his family moved from eastern Kentucky to this area after victory over Native Americans at the Battle of Fallen Timbers Ridge near present-day Elizabethtown. Denny named the community for NicholasVILLE, England, where he had been born in 1797. A post office called Nicholasville was established in 1827, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1914. In 1852 an act of Congress created Campbell County; Nicholasville became its county seat. At that time it had a population of just 5 people. By 1870 there were 30 families residing within the limits of Nicholasville; by 1900 there were 125 residents living there including 153 farmers and 78 manufacturing establishments (including one flour mill). In 1907 only 10% of all jobs within Campbell County were done within 100 miles ofNicholasville; today’s figure reaches 70%. The arrival of big box stores such as Sam’s Club and JCPenney during the 1990s quickly derailed small town businesses and contributed to a decline in population throughout much of central Kentucky during that decade or so – thoughNicholasville has seen some recent resurgence thanks to revitalization efforts led by Mayor Russ Weyerbach and Chamber Music Hall & Dinner Theatre promoter Greg Beattie among others. During the mid-19th century, KYLEs prolific economic success spawned numerous subsequent entrepreneurs who followed in his footsteps: David Dixon (a post office founder), John Witherspoon (a judge), James Auld (an entrepreneur involved in railroads), Hiram Maxim (founder of Maxim's department store chain), Charles Goodyear (founder of Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co.), Owen Youngblood (ownerof Louisville's first commercial brewery), Edwin Drake (editor-in-chief of The Cincinnati Journal) and others. Many key figures associated with early KYLEs are still alive today: David Dixon is buried at Christmastime at Union Cemetery; John Witherspoon is buried at Elmwood Cemetery; James Auld died in 1985; Hiram Maxim is interred at Arlington National Cemetery; Owen Youngblood is buried at Mount Auburn Cemetery; Edwin Drake is buried at West Lawn Memorial Park near Lexington).

Nicholasville experienced another period of growth from 1880 to 1920 as it became an important transportation hub on the Railroad Age network. In recent years, however, Nicholasville has fallen into decline due to several factors including increasing competition from larger towns along Interstate 65; lack of support from local government; and changes in lifestyle that have replaced agriculture with more urban-based activities.
