The town had two newspapers, The Nicholasville Herald and The Nicholasville Times, from 1827 to 1910. A school was also established in 1827 and continued operation until it closed in 1907. In 1861, the Union Army burned down the entire town as part of their battle at Jonesborough; no buildings were damaged but significant amounts of equipment were lost. In 1865, Nicholasville became an independent city when it merged with nearby Paducah. However, it reverted back to its original name in 1902 when Paducah merged with Louisville to form the Louisville metropolitan area. The population ofNicholasville peaked at around 20,000 during the late 19th century before declining over time due to various factors including increasing agricultural production and greater competition from other towns within Hardin County. Nevertheless, the community continued to thrive through World War II and into the postwar period as businesses regained their initial enthusiasm for local industry support which helped revive growth rates again after a lull in the late 1940s-early 1950s. By 1990Nicholasville's population had shrunk to under 10K because many residents left for more recent industrial centers such as HopkinsVILLE (since then renamed KFC) or Elizabethtown (later renamed Lexington). Some residents decided to return after moving elsewhere during this time; however most residents have since left again or are currently living elsewhere in Hardin County thanks both to new economic opportunities brought on by expansions into other counties within Kentucky while also enjoying some degree of social stability that has not been seen here since pre-war days

In 1896, an electric company arrived in Nicholasville and power began flowing to the town from nearby turbines. By 1920,Nicholasville had 2 stores and 4 businesses. During World War II,Nicholasville served as a military base for Operation Overlord because it became known as "The Tunnels" due to its strategic location within easy range of numerous Allied troops
