Polk became the first U.S. president to be born in Nicholasville and it remained an important military and political center during the 19th century due to its location on the Union Pacific Railroad's main line between Chicago and Omaha. Nicholasville was founded as a post office on October 24, 1802 by John Nichol from Virginia with Stephen Auld aspostmaster-general. On November 3, 1803, it became a town when John Nichol donated land for a town square and three churches were built within two years: First Baptist Church (1807), Methodist Church (1810), and Presbyterian Church (1811). The first school opened in Nicholasville on December 4, 1822 under teacher John Riddle with 10 students in attendance. A new school building was erected in 1840 which still stands today as part of First Baptist Church’s sanctuary complex. The original courthouse burned down on July 6, 1894 but was rebuilt soon afterward under construction of what is now Main Street inside First Baptist Church’s current facade using supplies provided by local contractor Jens Osterholm Jr.. For many years until 1974 – when it burned down again –NicholasVILLE had one of only two remaining steam locomotives left unrestored outside of Washington D C., also known as “Old Nick” after General James K Polk’s birthplace just south of downtown Nashville

Since then, NicholsVILLE has made progress on various fronts including passage of new zoning regulations that will protect its downtown area from gentrification; redevelopment efforts targeting vacant properties near central business districts; and establishment of a community garden that provides fresh vegetables to local families throughout summertime
