The first settlers in Nicholasville were farmers who came from eastern Kentucky in 1807. In 1840, Nicholasville became the home of Judge John Brownell and his family after he purchased land from John Fenton for $3 per acre. The Brownells were among the first white people to live in what would become Nicholasville proper. They built a log cabin on Black Creek which they named Green Gables after their daughter Green Gables (1810-1902). The house still stands and is currently used as a museum by the local historical society. In 1853, Senator James Muhlenberg of Maryland created Marshall County when he moved his seat from Baltimore to northernmost Jefferson County. The county was named for General Thomas Covington Marshall, an hero of the American Revolution who served as military governor during King George III's War (1775-1783). For many years before that, Marshall had been part of Hardin County which was formed from parts of Grayson and Wise counties in 1792. The city has hosted several notable events including the Kentucky Derby Festival which is held every year in late May or early June in downtownNicholasVILLE; as well as various other local fairs and festivals throughout the year. Nicholasville is also home to a number of Historically Significant buildings such as Old German Lutheran Church (1809), Wimpole Mansion (1825), First National Bank (1847), Garrison Armory (1912), and Christmastime Tree(1915).
