The first settler in Nicholasville was John Peele who arrived in 1799. Although some early settlers were planters or farmers, most of the town's residents worked on farms or within sawmill or lumberjack communities along the river that served as their transportation and commerce. In 1840, Nicholasvillians voted to become part of Louisville et al., Kentucky under statehood laws which gave them voting rights and access to public education through local school boards rather than having to rely on families with connections to higher-ups in government for schooling. They also voted not to secede from Kentucky during the Civil War because they felt that their interests would be better served by remaining within their mother state. After LexingtonLost its status as an independent city during Reconstruction following Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation in 1865, Nicholasvillians rejoiced when new taxes forced Louisville out of business and allowed them more autonomy as a community governed democratically by its own citizens. Although economic development slowed until around 1990 due largely to competition from neighboring cities such as Frankfort and Paducah,[2] Nicholasvillians have experienced recent resurgence thanks to several initiatives including support for arts & culture; cuisine representing over 50 different regional styles;[3] growth in tourism;[4] revival of horse racing;[5]and two tornado outbreaks which ledto reconstruction projects totaling over $50 million dollars statewide including new schools, roads, hospitals etc..
