Nicholasville was founded in 1818 by Nicholas Morrell, a surveyor. The town named after Nicholas Morrell is located in the northwestern part of the county, and it is considered to be one of the oldest towns in Kentucky. In 1847, Nicholasville became the capital of Hardin County. It was here that lawmakers decided to make gun barrels illegal for all but shotguns. A few years later, in 1850, rifle barrels were also outlawed. The ban on gun barrels lasted until 1934.
