Nicholasville, Kentucky is a town in Hardin County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hardin County. The first mention of Nicholasville comes from 1792 when it was known as "Newcastle". In 1801, Nicholasville was named after General James Wilkinson who fought in the War of 1812 and later became a U.S. congressman fromKentucky and Secretary of War under President James K. Polk. In 1819, Wilkinson's wife Eleanor married John Witherspoon and they started to name their children after representatives from various states in the Union- Andrew Witherspoon (1820-1899), George Washington Witherspoon (1822-1900) and John Quincy Adams Witherspoon (1825-1909). 2 October 1861 saw the beginning of Battle of Lexington when Confederate forces attacked a detachment led by Union General William Troup near Nicholasville while supplies were being transported through town to Lexington. The attack resulted in three killed, six wounded or missing and over thirty horses killed or captured before Union forces drove off the Confederates with little loss on their part

The name came from Nicholas Creek which flows through the town. The first permanent settler in Nicholasville was James White who platted and named the town in 1802 after Nicholas Cage, an officer in the American Revolution who fought for independence from Great Britain. James White's heirs sold part of the land to John Marshall and his family in 1813. They also built a courthouse and several homes around what is now Main Street. In 1816, settlers formed a company to build a road from Lexington to Knoxville that became known as "the Chain Road". This road connected Nicholasville with other settlements along its course. By 1830, all of Union County had been organized into seven townships: Nicholasville, Bowling Green, Lebanon, dark Valley (now parts of Lebanon and Hamilton), Springdale (now part of Damascus), Mount Vernon (now parts of Dayton and Athens), Springtown (now part of Manchester) and Tellico Landing (the present-day Knoxboro). In 1833–34, David Ladd built a mill on Brush creek near what is now Middleton Road in Nicholasvill
