Nicholasville was founded in 1851 by immigrants from Hungary. The town was named for Nicholas, the patron saint of Hungary. Nicholasville is a small, unincorporated community in Clark County, Kentucky, United States. It lies on the Fork of the Ohio River south of Georgetown and north of Mount Vernon. The population was 527 at the 2000 census. The community was named for Nicholas Wright, an early settler. Wright had bought land in what is now Nicholasville from John Allen in 1811. The first school in Nicholasville was built by local settlers in 1814. A post office called Nicholasville was established in 1828, and remained in operation until 1907. The community became a town in 1906 when it merged with Georgetown to form the larger Clark County town of Georgetown. In 1914, the name of the town was changed to Nicholasville after President Woodrow Wilson's visit to Kentucky that year. The original church in Nicholasville burned down in 1902 but was rebuilt and dedicated later that same year. The old courthouse also burned down but was rebuilt and dedicated later that same year as well.

Dixon's wife, Nancy, donated the land for the town. The first store and post office were built in 1789. In 1815, Nicholasville became a part of Greeneville County. In 1827, the county seat was moved to Nicholasville from Paris. The town experienced many changes during its history. In 1865, it was renamed after General George Washington Smith and later became known as "the birthplace of West Virginia." It also changed its name to Nicholasville in 1901 after its mayor, Nellie Acheson Nichols. The population ofNicholasville peaked at 3500 in 1950 but has since declined due to suburbanization and other factors. Today, there is only one small business left in Nicholasville- an auto repair shop
