A local history museum called "The Newcomers" opened its doors to visitors on Main Street near school No 4 on October 14th, 2006 with exhibits about early settlers such as Ira Allen who came overland through Virginia en route to Kentucky; Revillius Watkins who founded First Presbyterian Church there in 1903; Drs Lewis Fenton & Edwin Gentry who operated St Stephens Hospital from 1915-1917; Mrs Florence Owens who ran her own grocery store adjacent to School #4 from 1922 until her death in 1990.;and more recent residents like Jeffry Hatcher (the only person born here since 1800), Bill Trites (owner/operator of The Hatcher Grill), Donnie Kessler (founder/operator of Kessler's Place), wife Peggy Kessler (founder/operator of Peggy's Place), Dickie Weiser (owner/operator of Weiser's Building) etc..

Additionally, Newport is home to several universities including Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC), Eastern Kentucky University (EKU), Transylvania University (TUU) as well as two large shopping malls- one located near downtown and another close to the airport which serve as focal points for much of the local retail industry within their boundaries

It became an independent city again in 1907.
