Newport is a city located in Knox County, Kentucky, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 61,569. Newport is the county seat and has been since 1839. The first white settler in Newport was James Irvine. Newport was originally named "Newport on the Lick" after a small stream that ran through it. In 1838, John Browning settled in what is now Newport and founded the town of Browningville on land he had purchased from David Barbour. In 1840, Jeff Davis's retaliatory raid against pro-Unionists in eastern Kentucky destroyed much of Browningville and forced its relocation to Newport. The town's name change came about because early settlers couldn't find any other place with the same name as their original home (the original "Newport"). In 1841, Michael Norris opened a store at 4th and Market Streets called The Newbernors Store which continues to be open today as part of the Main Street Business Districts program run by the City of Newport. In 1861, General Philip Sheridan visited Newport while on his way north to campaign for Abraham Lincoln during the American Civil War. He enjoyed riding around on horseback throughout central Kentucky and decided to stop at this small town on his way back south. Although he didn't stay long, his visit helped set off a small industry in Newport - selling military supplies to Confederate forces fighting in the war. After Union troops burned down most of downtown Newport during an attack Aug 12 1865 by Confederate forces seeking revenge for raids conducted by local Unionist civilians two days earlier (Operation Crossroads), many residents chose either flee or fight under arms rather than surrender; however some stores still surrendered everything they had including guns and ammunition leaving behind nothing but trash cans full of munitions crates waiting for pickers to clear them out years later when those responsible were finally caught/charged/ convicted etc... Some people who refused help from retreating Rebels turned themselves into Federal Cavalry patrols looking for any available rebels hiding amongst their civilian fleeing compatriots...Eventually all stores closed up shop due mainly to lack of food & water & also lack of hope anyone would come back from searching for them so they could reopen...A few remaining stores reopened over time such as Poindexter’s grocery where they continued stocking items needed by everyone living holistically until eventually closing again around 1990 when Poindexter passed away…. Today there are only 3 historical buildings left standing: The Newbernors Store built before 1861 & destroyed 1865; A building used as an elementary school between 1871-1875 & demolished 1886; And A building used as a post office between 1913-1916 which still stands today…due mostly to extensive damage done by fire over time!

Newport, Kentucky is a small town in the Bluegrass region of Kentucky. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Clark County. The area now known as Newport was first settled by farmers and traders in the early 18th century. By 1800, it had grown to become a thriving community with a large market and several churches. In 1811, Commodore James Cook sailed through Newport on his way to find new lands for England, and he called it "the most beautiful harbor on the American continent." After Cook's visit, many people from Newport founded businesses and residences in what is now Louisville and Cincinnati. In 1815, after Stephens' Rebellion broke out in Kentucky, General Robert Ewing ordered General John Custer to march through Newport to attack Confederate forces at Harlan Castle. From there, Custer marched northwest along the Ohio River until he reached Lexington where he relieved General Donelson of his duties as governor of Tennessee during that state's civil war. In 1816-1817, when New Orleans was being built as an international port on the Mississippi River by French engineers under Napoleon Bonaparte, Newport became one of its many sites served by French seamen who made their homes ashore while they unloaded cargo or collected fares from ships anchored offshore. Many of these men were later recruited by Lafayette to help lead troops against Napoleon's army in 1799-1800 at Le Havre (near Paris). As part of this effort they erected three tall cottonwoods near present-day downtown Newport while working on shore batteries that protected them from pirate attacks during this time period The first permanent settlers arrived around 1800 in small groups led by Captain Robert Hogg and Joshua Gileson aboard HMS Discovery which transported goods upriver from Portsmouth docks then landed at Atchafalaya Falls on July 10th 1800 After landing they set about building a cabin using logs taken from nearby pine trees In March 1801 James White discovered coal beds near modern day Georgetown which provided additional impetus for settlement In December 1802 Reverend Driggs arrived with eight others traveling downriver on horseback named Mount Zion Baptist Church soon followed by another group including Ebenezer Harmon who settled near what is now Georgetown On January 5th 1803 Nathaniel Southerland established a ferry service across Beaver Creek connecting Point Lookout with Georgetown Landing creating more trade between local farmers and sailors By September 1800 there were twenty four families living along Beaver Creek with ninety five acres cultivated
In 1821, the General Assembly of Kentucky passed a bill authoring the creation of Newport. The town was named in honor of Thomas Jefferson and his wife Martha, who had been living in Paris at the time. The first settler in Newport was James Prentice. In 1827, the town had a population of 150 people. By 1830, it had grown to 300 people and by 1840 it had reached 1,000 people. The textile industry became dominant in Newport during this time and many famous companies were located there such as Smith & Wesson and Colt Firearms. In 1865, General Edwin Eads organized the Union Army during the American Civil War and Newport played an important role in that conflict as a military base. After the war ended, Newport declined because of its low population and lack of economic opportunities. However, since 1984 it has seen a resurgence with new development being announced for both the town center and its waterfront area
