Newport, Kentucky is a town in the U.S. state of Kentucky and is the largest city in the Newport County, Kentucky metropolitan area. The population was 7,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville–Jeffersonville–Anderson, KY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to land in what is now Newport were Native Americans who called it "Watauga." In 1776, General George Washington's army landed on this site and fought against British forces under Cornwallis. The battle resulted in a victory for the American side and helped lay the foundation for future American settlements in this region. After the war, General Washington built a military fort here which served as a base of operations for his campaigns into western Virginia and Tennessee. In 1827, entrepreneur Nicholas Biddle established an agricultural colony near what is now downtown Newport while still living on his mother’s farm outside of Lexington, Kentucky. By 1830 Biddle had developed into one of America’s leading entrepreneurs with interests that ranged from banking to shipping to real estate development. In 1831 he founded the first bank west of Chicago – First National Bank of Cincinnati – which became one of America’s most popular finance institutions throughout its history! In 1848 King George IV granted Newport city status through an act of Parliament; however, only two years later Newport surrendered itself to Confederate control during the Civil War because it sympathized with slavery! Reconstruction followed immediately afterwards and saw many African American men gain important employment opportunities within local businesses such as banks and factories (such as those operated by J.[ohn] Blair). Businesses flourished during this time but soon after World War II began economic decline led to social unrest culminating in riots that occurred on September 11th 1969 when hundreds thousand people demonstrated against segregated bus transportation within Newport limits! However today much has changed since then with new growth lead by both private enterprise and philanthropy; making Newport an vibrant community ready for celebration year-round!
Newport was founded by James Robertson in 1785. He and his family were the first permanent settlers in what is now Newport County, Kentucky. The town was named for the then-newport harbor on the Ohio River. In 1825, John Sevier donated land to build a courthouse and jail in Newport. The town's first school was built in 1829. In 1840, the Kentucky General Assembly chartered the Newport Academy to provide higher education for boys in Newport County. The academy became an all-male college in 1865 when it merged with Brown University.
