In 1800, two brothers, Nicholas and John Fenton, founded Newport on Lake Monongahela. The town grew rapidly due to its natural resources and its location on a major river corridor. By 1830, Newport had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1835, General James Hays invested $1 million in coal mines in what would become Newport County. This investment allowed Newport to become one of the leadingMidwestern cities during this time period. In 1841, President James K. Polk issued an executive order creating West Virginia Territory from part of Virginia that included parts of today's Kentucky and Ohio counties. As a result of this order, many eastern Virginians moved into western Kentucky as land was available for purchase at low prices following the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). Some residents who remained in Newport decided to stay after repeal of the executive order caused economic hardship throughout much of southeastern Kentucky due to job losses across much of Virginia due to increased production from outside sources such as Pittsburgh and Cincinnati because Democrats controlled Congress at that time. In 1870s through 1880s new waves of Italian Americans arrived in Newport seeking their opportunity for social mobility within American society after they had left their rural homes back home in Italy during World War I (1914-1918). Many Italians worked as laborers or truck drivers on local roadways before landing jobs as grocery store clerks or other blue-collar positions during prohibition (alcohol prohibition) when most businesses closed because it was illegal under state law; however some Italians managed to keep running successful businesses despite Prohibition until it ended nationally in 1933 with passage of the National Prohibition Act (21 U.S.C., Section 811)). These immigrants were instrumental in establishing many aspects associated with modern day Newport including its large commercial center which became known as "The Center" thanks largely to Its first Italian restaurant - La Piazza - which opened in 1923 by Vito Rinaldi.(Rinaldi also started The Daily News paper published every morning since 1925) This business district eventually expanded westward along Interstate 65 past downtown where several highrise buildings still stand today including One Lincoln Place and Kane Building(formerly The Enterprise building), now used by KFC chicken restaurants adjacent thereto(Kane Tower being demolished Winter 2017). Residents continue inhabit these buildings while development takes place nearby consisting primarily residences (e.[g., Great Lakes Village), small business districts (e.[g., University District), professional office buildings/retail stores (. . .)and various other types mixed use developments are currently under construction or planned for near future growth around Grandview Crossing mall area.) Today there are numerous cultural attractions within walking distance such as: arts venues like Main Street Armory Arts Center & Gallery which houses multiple theaters and art galleries; historical sites like Fort Donelson State Park just east off Interstate 65 adjacent to downtown; outdoor swimming pools like Pump House Pool located next door to Chamber Music Hall on Riverside Drive; Botanical gardens called Lick Observatory near downtown along Withrow Avenue; popular summer tourist destinations like Bluegrassland amusement park located about an hour north west driving down historic Route 66 between Paris Junction & Versailles Junction south thereof & Clingmans Dome NP approximately 75 miles east taking visitors along scenic routes named Little Kanawha River Rd thence downstream past Charleston Tunnel then southwest bound onto US 64 en route terminating at Winchester NP beside Shenandoah River
Newport was founded in 1795 by General James K. Polk, who had come from nearby Fort Knox and then served as a captain in the United States military during the American Revolution. The town was named for Newport News, Virginia, where he had been born. In 1801, General Andrew Jackson moved his headquarters from Nashville to Newport after becoming president of the United States. During the War of 1812, Newport was one of several towns that sided with America against Great Britain. After the war, many people left to form what is now known as the "Newport Gentry." In 1840, General William Henry Harrison appointed John Cranch as commissioner of Indian Affairs in Kentucky. Cranch's role included trying to resolve land disputes between Native Americans and white settlers. In 1851, Cranch became speaker of the Kentucky House of Representatives and helped pass legislation creating education opportunities for black Kentuckians. He also supported railroad construction through Kentucky and beyond. In 1865, President Abraham Lincoln issued an Executive Order making it illegal for any slave owner in any state or territory to free his slaves without first getting a special permit from Washington D.C.. This order caused great uproar throughout slavery-supporting states such as Kentucky and Missouri; however, most slaveholders chose not to free their slaves until AFTER Lincoln's death in 1865. In 1861-1865, many men from neighboring Indiana volunteered to Join Confederate forces during the Civil War because they felt that slavery should be abolished rather than defended by those who owned it (the "Newfoundlanders"). As a result of this decision (and others made within Kentucky), much valuable farmland lay within Union lines at that time - one reason why attitudes among some residents toward Union troops were mixed at best while others openly wished them dead (). However following Union victory over Confederate forces at Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865 all remaining Confederate forces were destroyed including almost all their equipment which effectively ended the war in southern America). Newcomerstown Presbyterian Church massacre: On October 25th 1961 two teenagers named Leroy Byrd and Michael Collins came across five whites working on a farm near Newcomerstown when they decided to rob them; when they didn't get what they wanted they started towards home but three gunmen confronted them asking for their money; when Byrd didn't have enough money one shot him dead while Collins managed to run away before being caught by police moments later
