Newport is a town in Adam Mickiewicz County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 2,955 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Adam Mickiewicz County. Newport is the most populous community in Adam Mickiewicz County and part of the Lexington-Fayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1800, Nicholas Trimble settled what would become Newport on a stretch of land that he had bought from John Rossiter for £10 sterling. On July 9, 1802, after months of negotiations and purchase by Trimble's family, they laid their first brick cornerstone to begin construction on what would eventually become known as "The Shipbuilding Point". Nicholas Trimble was instrumental in helping develop Newport into a thriving small town and founded its first school in 1808. In 1814, he donated land to build a courthouse which still stands today within walking distance of his home. Newport's economy changed dramatically when President James Ketchum authorized the construction of the Cumberland Railroad near Newport on December 5,1828. This new transportation artery helped spur development throughout eastern Kentucky and soon brought many people to this renamed port city for work or investments opportunities. In 1921, Mayor John Denny merged two other small cities into Newport – Owensboro and Lebanon – creating what is now known as "The City". In 1954, following a referendum vote that approved annexation by Louisville – then-largest city - Newport became fully incorporated into Louisville under its current name.
