Afterward, many refugees from KY were brought here including veterans returning from World War I who helped start what is now Uptown/Old Town business district; also major contributions came from Italians who had come fleeing American Fascism during that time period which helped build much of downtown Newport into today's vibrant community memory . In 1977–1978 the City Council voted unanimously to rename itself "Newport" after Mayor Harry Cavanaugh who spearheaded its incorporation into Newport County a few years earlier
