The area that makes up Newport was originally settled by Europeans in the 17th century. In 1802, construction began on the first courthouse in what is now Newport and it opened in 1805. It served as the county seat until 1829 when Louisville became the official capital of Kentucky. However, because of its location within Jefferson County, Newport continued to be used as a judicial and administrative center for many years. Newport is one of four townships inJefferson County and has a total land area of just over 10 square miles (25 km²). Its population density was 1,541 people per square mile (631/km²). According to the 2006 census estimate, there are also 712 housing units located within Newport Township which totals 2,919 people living in a total community setting occupying all or part of 154 buildings! The first permanent settler arrived in what is now Newport around 1800. By 1830 most of what would become Newport had been developed as a farming community with some scattered homes scattered throughout rural Jefferson County. For many years after this initial development there were no major changes to the way life here other than occasional expansions into adjacent counties due to natural disasters such as earthquakes or floods etcetera
