However, by 1840 only about 50 people lived in Murraytownships statewide because of competition from larger towns such as Cincinnati and Louisville which had increased their populations significantly since those times. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), many men from nearbyScott Countysuch as General Samuel Jumonvilleand Major General John Sappington enlisted in Union military service to fight against Confederate forces across America. Many talented young men from around Kentucky volunteered their services; some became generals while others served as privates or corporals in Union units that fought northward along the frontiers of America during that war. One notable Kynectan combatant was Private First Class George Armstrong Custer who perished while leading an attack against Indian warriors near Fort Harrison on November 25th, 1876
