Murray is a town in McConnell County, Kentucky, United States. It was founded in 1814 by General James Bowie as a stage stop on the Great Western Trail. Murray's name comes from James Bowie, who named it for his father, General John Bowie. The population of Murray was 914 at the 2010 census. The first settlers in what is now Murray were farmers who arrived in the area during the early 1800s. They farmed until around 1830 when a group of soldiers under the command of Colonel George Rogers Clark discovered coal deposits near present-day Murray and began to prospect for land. In 1824, they made an agreement with two other groups to purchase 8,000 acres (3 km2) of land between them for $100 each. The settlement that resulted became known as Murraytown and quickly grew into a small community with over 100 residents. In 1828, Governor Andrew Johnson approved the creation of McConnell County and Murray was one of its first settlements. At that time, most residents located in the county were farmers or mechanics who worked on nearby plantations or livestock operations. By 1840, however, many residents had relocated to what is now downtown Murray because of new economic opportunities available in Louisville and Nashville due to increased trade throughout the Cumberland Mountains region. In 1861, Confederate forces invaded Kentucky duringthe American Civil War and burned down much of Louisville before retreating across Tennessee into Alabama. A few weeks later, Union forces attacked these same Confederate troops at Murphysboro before withdrawing back towards Kentucky lines northeast of Lexington under cover of darkness After the war ended in 1865, business conditions improved significantly withinMurray thanks largely to overpopulation along Interstate 70 which had rapidly expanded since war’s end). This growth led to demands for more housing and schools beginning in earnest after Reconstruction era ended – this pressure ultimately contributed to Homestead Act giving citizens ownership rights over their properties beginning in 1870 . This period also saw important changes withinMurray itself; incorporation into newly formed Commonwealth ofKentucky followed by annexation by Louisville following statehood on November 15th 1907 Today there are still active businesses located within downtown Murray as well as several apartment complexes located close-by; all while maintaining some degree levelof cultural preservation including traditional music performances and arts shows held throughout year

In 1836, a school was built and soon after, a church also joined the community. In 1868, a gristmill was built and within 5 years, it became one of the most important businesses in the town. By 1890, there were over 200 residents living in Murray. It remained an important center for commerce until around World War II when it slowly declined due to its close proximity to larger towns such as Louisville and Lexington. Today, Murray is still home to a few hundred residents and is mostly used as a tourist spot.
