In 1830, John Wesley Hardin donated land near present-day Paducah to establish what would become Murray University; it opened its doors in 1831. In 1840, Joseph Ladd purchased 600 acres (222 hectares) northwest ofpresent-day Louisville and east of Thomson Station on Beaver Creek from Sidney Rigdon for $1,000 (). Ladd organized what would become known asthe Louisville & Nashville Railroad which connected Louisville with Nashville via Paducah () before becoming part ofthe Union Pacific Railway in 1868. Today, much of that line still operates within Murray County boundaries as part of Amtrak's "Link Train".

Murray was a small town in Kentucky when it became the seat of Campbell County in 1857. The name Murray is derived from the word "mury," which means "to flow." In 1798, James Murray, Sr., built a gristmill on the confluence of the Ohio and Cumberland rivers. The mill produced flour for local merchants and farmers. The airport later served as operational headquarters for both NATO forces during Operation Overlord and Operation Desert Storm; also saw use by private individuals including Billionaire Richard Branson while he prepared to establish his Virgin Galactic spaceflight company during 2004–2005 season Today, Murray is home to several businesses including Southeastern Ky.-based JardineUSA Holdings Inc., which manufactures marine supplies; Murry Glassesteves Fine Art Gallery; and Bluegrass Brewery & Distillery Ltd., founded in 1935 by businessman Donnie McClure that produces craft beers made from natural ingredients only found within 100 miles of Lexington KY
