Murray, Kentucky is a small town located in the Appalachian Mountains of eastern Kentucky. The population was 9,711 at the 2000 census. The name Murray comes from an early settler named James Murray and his family. In 1851, the United States Army granted land to James Murray in what is now Murray County. The town was founded on July 20, 1852 by John Ritchie and others as a post office called "Cleveland." On October 15, 1854, a school was built which served as the first public school in Murray County. In 1861, the Union army occupied Kentucky and most of Appalachia; this event led to violence in KY which ultimately led to the end of slavery throughout much of the region. The town's fortunes changed with World War I when munitions production increased due to American entry into that war. During World War II, numerous companies were located here including GEICO, Monsanto and Raytheon among others. By 1945 there were only 8 businesses left in town after being destroyed by bombing during World War II; however, since then various businesses have settled down and continue to thrive such as Applebees (since 1957), KFC (since 1971), Amazon (since 1997) and Bed Bath & Beyond (since 2002). Today, Murray is home to several stores that are vital for local economic growth such as Dollar General ($44 million revenue last year) and Pohl’s Sporting Goods ($25 million revenue last year). Additionally there are many restaurants and bars that have made their mark on the community such as Busch Gardens amusement park ($) or Peet’s Coffeehouse ($) which has been open since 1961 ().Murray also boasts numerous athletic teams including basketball team USA-Kentucky (.807 winning percentage since1995), soccer team KYBETA (.865 record), baseball team KYRYR (.833 record) & golf team USAMax (.768 record). In 1865, after General Andrew Johnson's Emancipation Proclamation ended slavery in America, Murray became the first Freedmen's Bureau station in Jackson County. The town prospered during Reconstruction era due to its role as a transportation hub and its location near military barracks and other strategic points on the frontier. In 1892, Murray lost its incorporation status but continued to be known as "Murray". The post office called Murray "the prettiest little village" because of its small size and lack of factories or mills that could have destroyed the town's economy.
