Murray, Kentucky is a small town in the Bluegrass region of Kentucky. The population was 553 at the 2010 census. Murray was founded in 1872 by John and Martha Murray. It became a city in 1907. Murray is located about 20 miles east of Louisville, the state capital. The first settlers in what is now Murray were farmers who came from eastern Pennsylvania and Maryland. They started out on small plots of land and eventually built up some large farms that stretched for many miles. In 1872, John and Martha Murray bought 640 acres (248 hectares) of land west of present-day Louisville, which they named Murray after their father's native home in Scotland. The Murrays grew corn, hay, wheat, apples and other vegetables on their farm until 1902 when they sold it to Wm Hitefeldt and his brother-in-law Arent Vanderlip for $3 million dollars. In 1907, the city of Murray was born when it amalgamated with several other towns around it to become one consolidated municipality under the name of Louisville metropolitan area. At that time, Louisville had a population of over 130 thousand people while Murray had a population of just over 553 people. In 1831, the Mormons decided to move away from Kentucky because of religious persecution from Utah.
