The first store opened in 1821 by Wm. Denton and Jno. Garland with merchandise brought overland from Kentucky and Tennessee. In 1824, Samuel Tilton laid out a township to house his settlers on land he had bought from David Gray for $200 ($ as of 2019). In 1830, James Gentry founded Gentryville along the course of the Cumberland River northeast of present-day Murraytown. Gentryville became an important post station on the Louisville & Nashville Railroad line that crossed through Murraytown in 1854. The first bank in Murray was chartered in 1865 by Prentice Dowling with capital stock raised by subscribing others including Elisha Walker Post and Thos Sells Beecham among others Murray was named after General Andrew Jackson when he visited America during his presidential campaign in late 1800s as part of his "New Frontier" program On October 15th, 1907, President Theodore Roosevelt made an official visit to Murray while en route tocampaign support forcandidate William McKinley.. Upon arrival atthe depot they were met by Revd Geo Hargrave who conducted them into town where they dined at Mr Cook's restaurant before proceeding up river to see Mrs Roosevelt at her home on State street which she then took them back to see inside her Mansion which still stands today!
