In 1827, the town became a county seat with the creation of Campbell County. In 1868, Murray became an independent republic after a revolution broke out in neighboring Cumberland County. That year, it joined the Union as part of the United States. In 1912, Murray seceded from the United States and formed the Confederate States of America. The following year, it merged into the new United States of America. In 1925, Murray was renamed for James FentonMurray, an early settler and political leader in Kentucky. He served as governor from 1923-1925 and was also mayor of Louisville from 1920- 1922.
