The first gun targets were made in 1795 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte, a French soldier and engineer. The target was an iron or wood disk with a circle of metal or plastic put on the top. This disk was shot at from a long distance and allowed shooters to hit their target with relative accuracy. In 1851, Charles Fort designed and built the first successful gun model that could be fired using breech loading mechanisms. The weapon was called the “New Model Rifle” and became very popular due to its effectiveness. It remained in use until the early 20th century. During World War I, artillerymen used targets such as large masonry shells, star shells, dummy rounds and machine guns to observe enemy positions and indirect fire for friendly forces. Infantryman also adopted target practice in order to improve their shooting skills. In 1935, Hermann Göring developed the so-called "Göring Gun" which had a bullet that could be fired from any direction without reloading. Murray, Kentucky is a small town in Woodford County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,846 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Cumberland River. The first people to live in Murray were the Byers family who arrived in 1798. The post office was established in 1829 and named for General John Murray, an American Revolutionary War general. For many years it was the only post office in Woodford County. In 1873, a new post office called Indian Hills was opened and served defendant citizens of that name until 1907 when all Murray residents were appointedPostmasters by the state government. By 1910 there were only 7 residents living in Murray while over 20 lived elsewhere in Woodford County. In 1909, some businessmen from Louisville decided to move their manufacturing plant into what would become Murray and started trading goods with local farmers and merchants They built a mill on the current site of the townhall which still stands today and produced flour, feedstock for coal mines, cheese and other products until it closed its doors in 1978 after more than 200 years of production. A new shopping center opened near downtown Murray in 1997 which helped revive the economy of this quiet community growing slowly since before railroads came through town as commerce shifted from wagon trains to automobiles . A fire destroyed most of downtown Murray on July 10th 2006 but quickly rebuilt following donations from locals including four businesses that reopened within two weeks thanks to a grant from then-Governor Steve Beshear Today there are few places left within walking distance of anything even though much has changed since those early days such as demolition work taking place along one side of Main Street just east of where it meets US 421 which now marks the old business district... slight progress has been made towards restoring or Replacing many historic buildings dating back to pioneer times especially around Marshall’s Tavern/Bryant & Stratton Store across US 421 just south of present day Main Street (formerly known as “the square”). There have been no major floods here during recent decades so there are hopes that some extensive rehabilitation will begin soon inside brick walls once again!
Murray, Kentucky was founded in 1793 by Captain James Murray. The city was named for Captain Murray because he donated the land on which it stands. In 1814, the town was incorporated and became a part of Louisville, Kentucky. The population of Murray reached 10,000 in 1920 and peaked at 25,000 in 1940. The population decreased to 12,500 in 1960 and fell to 7,800 in 2000. Today, the population is less than 2200.
