The post office was established in 1827, and became a county seat in 1840. In 1861, after Confederate forces occupied Louisville, Kentucky, Murray formed its own government with a unicameral legislature and an executive council headed by a colonel general as its head In 1865, Union General William Totten destroyed most of the bridges over the Ohio River between Louisville and Nashville because he felt they were being used by Confederate forces to move supplies to their army on the ground. As a result of this destruction, much of what had been built within Murray borders since 1800 disappeared; only two churches remain standing from that time period: Saint Joseph's Episcopal Church (now called First Baptist Church) and Saint Andrew's Episcopal Church (now called Christ Episcopal Cathedral). Between 1870-1920 there were some 24 cotton plantations that operated along the river valley producing rice, cornmeal and other crops for local markets; these plantations also raised horses for transportation to market as well as hogs for slaughtering purposes. After World War II many farmers abandoned farming due to changes in technology which made production methods more efficient; however a few families continued operations until around 1970 when numerous homes were built along Chilton Boulevard immediately east of downtown which served as retail stores until recently when they were taken down to make way for new construction including apartments tower that rise above Main Street today
