Murray is a small town in Hardin County, Kentucky. The population was 5,083 at the 2010 census. Murray is located on the Ohio River and straddles its border with Indiana. Murray was founded in 1819 by Captain John Murray and his band of riflemen as a trading post on the river's edge. The post served as a stop on Indian trade routes and also sheltered travelers during times of political unrest in nearby West Virginia. In 1830, Captain Murray purchased land east of present-day Murray from the Shawnee tribe for $1,000. He named his new settlement after himself, making it one of only two U.S. settlements to be named after individuals (the other being Charleston, South Carolina). The first settlers arrived in small groups over the next few years and construction of the town's first buildings began in 1833. By 1840, most residents had relocated to their new homes and Murray became an important commercial center within central Kentucky. The town experienced growth in both size and importance until the American Civil War interrupted its development. In 1861, Union General Donelson invaded Kentucky to overthrow Confederate Genlysses S. Grant and drove many southern farmers into eastern Kentucky for refuge; this caused significant damage to Murray due to flooding during heavy rains that season. Afterward, Union soldiers occasionally looted stores and houses in the town while military barracks were constructed nearby (this practice continued up through Reconstruction). A large influx of northern white workers followed World War I when vast amounts of munitions were needed by America’s allies; this led to increased development aroundtown including new housing developments, a movie theater (the first ever built outsideof Cincinnati),and more than twenty businesses which thrived until the early 1970s when commerce declined along with population growth rates throughout much of central Appalachia due to mechanization and suburban sprawl statewide following World War II boomtowns such as Louisville/Jeffersonville/Independence etc..
