Murray, Kentucky is a small town in the U.S. state of Kentucky. The population was 1,911 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington–Fayette–Jefferson City, KY Metropolitan Statistical Area. Murray is located on the Cumberland River and has a history dating back to 1792 when it was called "Boyd's Ferry." Murray was founded by James Boyd and others as a trading post on the Cumberland River in what is now Scott County. In 1815, it became a county seat with the creation of Scott County from parts of Hardin and Breathitt Counties. In 1827, James Boyd sold what is now Murray to John Cavanaugh for $1,000 cash. Cavanaugh built the first store in Murray and started selling flour and other goods from his home on Main Street. He also raised livestock and ran a ferry across the river until he died in 1865. His son-in-law Andrew Jenson continued running the ferry until 1903 when it was taken over bythe United States Government for military purposes during World War I. During World War II, Murray served as Headquarters for Army Group Southeast before being surrendered by Japan on September 2, 1945 The post office closed in 1985 but remains open as an agricultural center with weekly operations outdoors since 1974 According to The Daily Herald (July 15th 1902), "The people of this little settlement are so busy about their own affairs that they have not had time to concern themselves with those which affect their surrounding communities." Murray, Kentucky is a small town in Johnson County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,816 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Johnson County and home to Murray State University. The first settlement in what is now Murray was made by surveyors working for the Clay Company in 1813. A log cabin was built on the site of present-day Murray in 1825 by John Crouch. In 1827, James Hance founded what became known as Hanceville on land that he had claimed from David Dickenson and his followers during the Indian Removal War. The original Hanceville community consisted of a few log cabins and a store. In 1830, Isaac Hill founded another small community called Westport near present-day Louisville. This community grew quickly due to its location near both rivers and transportation routes. In 1834, John Dicks settled in Westport and began operations as a flour miller. A post office was established at Murray in 1840, but no evidence exists that it served the village until after 1861 when it was moved to nearby Easton because of its proximity to the newly established Lexington papers company. After becoming an incorporated town on October 10th of that year, Murray saw rapid growth thanks to new businesses such as stores, hotels, doctor's offices and churches opening up along with an increase in housing developments including several brick homes built by local farmer Wm Ewing Coke between 1850-1860 which remain standing today as part of downtown Murray's architecture."
Murray, Kentucky was named for General James Murray who fought in the American Revolution. The town was founded on a plantation by the family of General John Murray. The first post office in the town was established in 1836. In 1860, the Union army burned down the home of local farmer and political figure David Stone.
