Murray was founded in 1821 as a small community on the right bank of the river Cumberland River by Major General George Washington Maxwell and his family. The town grew rapidly during the 1830s and 1840s due to its strategic location between Louisville, Kentucky, on the west bank of the river and Nashville, Tennessee on the east bank. In 1851, Murray became an incorporated city under state law. The city lost its charter in 1865 but regained it in 1933. The local paper manufacturing industry declined during World War II with many companies moving their factories away from Murray because of shortages of materials in Europe. However, since then there has been a resurgence of this industry with several mills opening up throughout Murray County. One large company that has stayed here for over 50 years is Macy's Department Store which moved its headquarters to downtown Murray in 1996 after more than 60 years located in Springfield, Missouri
