Murray is a small town in Clay County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. The name Murray comes from a Shawnee word meaning "The Place Where the Chiefs Gathering Was Held." The first settler in what is now Murray was James Ewing and his family who arrived in 1814. Murray's history can be traced back to the day when Indian traders met with European settlers on the Cumberland River. One of these traders, Andrew Wood, purchased some land east of present-day Murray and named it after himself, Woodford County being one of his assigned lands. In 1792, John Fenton established a post near where today's Broadway Street crosses the Cumberland River. This became known as Fenton Station and later as Murray Station. In 1815, James Ewing located a cabin on an upland farm that he had purchased along the river bank east of present-day Murray. He named this place "Ewingtown", which served as its first permanent home until 1840 when it was moved to its current site. In 1817 or 1818, two other pioneers - David Herron and John Buhl - founded a post further upriver at Big Run Campsite on what is now Middle Fork Road south of present-day Murray. These posts were abandoned by 1830 because of successful Indian attacks against them (see Battle of Big Run). Consequently, only Ewingtown remained until 1840 when it also passed away (see sale). In 1800 or 1801, Moses Sweetman founded another post about three miles upstream from present-day Murray on upper Beaverdam Creek bed (now part of Kemptville Township). This site became known as Sweetman Station and continued to serve as such until 1907 when it closed down because of economic reasons. From here on out all future mail deliveries were made via boat topresent day Paducah Junction where they were received by wagon drivers before being transported across the river to Lexington for delivery into town center
