Murray, Kentucky is a town in Scott County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest of the seven towns in Scott County and it is also home to Murray State University. The first white person to come to Murray was James Robertson in 1811. He built a cabin on land that he purchased from the Shawnee Nation. The first school was built in 1814 by teacher Elijah White and students from nearby Harrisonburg helped build it. In 1827, General Nathan Bedford Forrest attacked and burned down the courthouse in what is now Murray. The townspeople rebuilt their courthouse which still stands today. In 1836, Governor Thomas Fenton commissioned surveyor John Witherspoon to map out what would become Murray township and he named it for General Forrest's brother-in-law, Alexander MiddaughMurray (1802-62). By 1840 there were about seventy families living in Murray Township with nine schools and three churches providing education for schoolchildren during winter months when no other homes were available or when teachers could not be found due to snowmobilization or army service. By 1860 there were over one thousand people living within present day Murray Township limits with sixteen schools serving students grades pre-kindergarten through twelveth grade; five churches providing worship services during winter months; two steamboats running between Louisvilleport and Glasgow Landing carrying goods upriver; four coal mines supplying fuel for McCabe's sawmills; two banks; six stores including two grocery stores operated by Jno Henson & Bros.; one blacksmith shop; twenty-four agricultural enterprises employing fifteen hundred workers engaged mainly in raising corn, potatoes, hay, oats, cottonseed oil and fruits trees etc.; eighteen residences housing some one thousand residents while others lived off of public lands such as ten miles of river frontage on seven different streams draining into the Ohio River It should be noted that although many people spoke English as their primary language at home during this time period most residents did not leave behind any documents recording their lives here other than memories which can be confirmied through oral history interviews with current residents or digital records online. Oral histories have been extensively used throughout this process as they provide unique insights into our local government history In 1861 Congress passed an act known as "The Homestead Act" giving citizens of America THE RIGHT TO BUY AND OWN REAL ESTATE IN AMERICA WITHOUT FIRST PAYING ANYTHING BACK INCLUDING TAXES FOR YEARS TIL THEY SOLD OR HAD THEIR CLAIM PROCEEDS REVOKED BY THE GOVERNMENT . This gave settlers such as George Washington Vanderbilt (himself owner of several million acres of land) the opportunity to purchase land east of Louisville for just $600 per acre including surveys and homesteading privileges which he immediately granted to his numerous partners including his brother Cornelius Vanderbilt who formed Vanderbilt Holdings LLCthe largest real estate development company ever createdand donated $25 million towards title research
