Mayfield was founded in 1794 by James Mayfield and his family. The town grew rapidly during the 1800s, becoming a center for trade and commerce. A courthouse and jail were built in 1805, and the town became an important stop on the Underground Railroad. In 1851, Mayfield was renamed Louisville after General Robert E. Lee, Jr. The town experienced a period of prosperity during the late 19th century, but declined in popularity following the American Civil War. It regained some prominence after World War II as a manufacturing center, but has since Declined again.
