Mayfield is a town in Hardin County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,816 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Johnson City metropolitan area. The town was established in 1802 and named for Colonel Thomas Mayfield (1768-1835). The first store in town was built by John Wilkinson on West Main Street in 1803. A post office was established at Mayfield in 1806, and remained open until it closed in 1907. Mayfield became a railroad junction on the Louisville & Nashville Railroad after it completed its line through Hardin County from Louisville to Paducah on December 12, 1859. The intersection of Main and Fifth Streets served as the town's commercial center for many years before being supplanted by New Albany during the late nineteenth century. In 1893, Mayfield had its own school district which made it one of the few towns in Kentucky without public schools until that time. In 1908, a group of business people petitioned President Theodore Roosevelt to annex Hardin County into Indiana because they felt that statehood would provide more opportunities for businesses within their borders. After much discussion and debate, Roosevelt granted their request on December 5th and Hardin County became part of Indiana on January 3rd 1909. As Indiana grew more populous with expanding agricultural production and industry corridors connecting Indianapolis with Chicago and other cities throughout Illinois and Michigan via railways such as the Erie Canal (the original route), so too did trade routes connect Hardin County with Louisville & Nashville railroads running north from Indianapolis crossing I-65 near Bowling Green to reach Lexington; this interchange formed what is now known as "The Crossing" or "Kentucky Route 66". This period saw increased tourism along I-65 corridor due to new hotels development adjacent to Interstate 65 along with new restaurants opening up across both directions including some located right next door to old railway yards where passenger trains used to stop enroute between these eastern cities

The first house in Mayfield was built by James Bowman himself on what is now Main Street. John Bowman married Mary, the daughter of George Catlett, which helped increase population growth in the town. In 1815, Isaac McCoy moved from Louisville to establish a store near present-day intersection of Third Street and Main Street in Mayfield. This store served as an important trade center for local residents because it held goods such as grist, flour, soap, candles and other items necessary for daily life. In 1818, McCoy also established a school in the town which became one of the most popular schools in central Kentucky due to its excellent teaching facilities and large student body. After suffering financial setbacks during the American Civil War (1861-1865), McCoy reopened his store under new ownership in 1865 and continued to operate it until his death five years later. By 1870,Mayfield had reached its peak population with around 100 citizens living within a radius of 10 miles of downtown; however this number decreased over time as newer settlements were founded closer to Highway 6A which connected Lexington with Cincinnati through Mayfield at various points throughout the 19th century
Mayfield was founded in 1790 by John Mayfield. The town was named for the Mayflower, which landed in Plymouth County, Massachusetts on April 15, 1792.
