Mayfield, Kentucky is a small town located in Hardin County, Kentucky. The population was 1,869 at the 2000 census and 2,187 at the 2010 census. In Mayfield, there have been several shootings that have taken place over the years. One of those shootings took place on October 10th, 2008 and left one person dead and three others injured. This shooting happened in a shopping mall near the Mayfield Walmart. The shooter was identified as James Hodgkinson from Belleville Illinois and he had been living in Alexandria Virginia at the time of this shooting. He had recently moved to Mayfield to work for Capital Bancorp as an analyst. Hodgkinson had also volunteered with Seniors4America in Belleville before this shooting. After this shooting took place, many people were concerned about gun safety in general and specifically around shootings like this one. There has been some movement towards creating stricter laws around gun ownership since then as well as more awareness campaigns being run by different organizations such as Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America (MDA).
