The first settlers in Mayfield were refugees from the Battle of Bull Run on April 26, 1861. The Battle of Bull Run changed the course of history as Union General Robert E. Lee lost more men than Confederate General Stonewall Jackson combined and so Mayfield became an important strategic center for both armies during the war. After the war ended, many farms in Scott County were turned over to state governments by Congress because they had been too closely overseen by Confederate generals and politicians. As a result of this change in ownership, much land that used to be within Mayfield's boundaries was now outside its limits or under other farmer's control. This made it difficult for residents to get around government prohibitions against farming within city limits and so growth began to slow in what had once been one of Appalachia's most vibrant communities. However, some local entrepreneurs decided that there was still potential for growth inside what were then known as "the redoubts." They started an oil refinery in 1949 and soon developed a heavy manufacturing industry which helped support local businesses and families alike through tough times during the Great Depression era. In 1973, after years of planning and investment by two businessmen who called themselves "The Town Fathers," Mayfield went through another major transformation when its municipal government was merged with neighboring Lexington into one communitywide government which has continued to grow since then even as its constituent parts have experienced different economic fluctuations over time.
