Mayfield, Kentucky is a town located in Marshall County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,080 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington-Fayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by Mormons in 1847 and named after Major General Israel Putnam Mayfield, who had served as a colonel under Ulysses S. Grant during the American Civil War. Mayfield was a delegate to the 1850 Republican National Convention and helped engineer passage of the Kansas–Nebraska Act which opened up Kansas to settlement by Americans. He also served as mayor from 1855 to 1860 and as a state legislator from 1861 to 1865. In 1875, Mayfield became home to the first rifle stock company in America when John Pugh established Pugh & Co., riflesmiths and gunsmiths at their store on Main Street. The company continued business until 1912 when it closed its doors for good due to prohibitionism in America. In 1922, John Pugh's son Glenn startedMayfields Gun Shop on Elm Street west of downtown where he still operates today with over 100 employees including his son Glenn Jr., currently Manager/Owner

Mayfield rifle stocks history can be traced back to 1811 when inventor, Jesse Mayfield, developed a stock for a muzzle loading rifle that would later become the Model 1851 Springfield. The first rifles made in Mayfield's factory were built with new stocks and barrels made of walnut. By 1856, production was moved to the present-day town of Mayfield, Kentucky because of increasing demand from settlers in the area. In 1871, gunsmiths at the factory began producing rifles with detachable magazines. These magazines allowed soldiers and civilians to fire multiple rounds without having to reload each time. This innovation would later become known as "themayfield method." In 1905, Jesse Mayfield's son David took over his father's business and continued production of firearms until his death in 1912. His son then passed on the company name and ownership to his nephew John Hays who continued producing firearms until 1949. In 1957, John Hays' son Bob took over management of the company and producedguns under three different names before finally becoming manager in 1978. Today, Bob Hays continues manufacturing guns in Mayfield into today
Mayfield is a small town in Hardin County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 571 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville-Jefferson County, Kentucky Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Mayfield were current residents of nearby Hazard and started clearing land for farming around 1820. By 1840, a post office had been established and by 1851, a school had been built. A Methodist Episcopal Church was founded in 1892 and continued to be operational until it closed in 1955. In 1898, Mayfield became the site of what is now known as the "Battle of Mayfield" when forces from both the Confederate States of America and the Union Army fought an engagement which resulted in three dead on both sides and five wounded. The event has been documented through oral histories, photographs, artifacts and even live footage from local broadcasters since then. Today, Mayfield is one of many small towns that have thrived due to heavy investment by newcomers over time – attracted by its unique history and landscape opportunities. Many businesses have come and gone over the years but some notable constants include two grocery stores (Red Lobster & Kroger) as well as several pubs including The Bluegrass Tavern & Grill (now closed), The Old Mill Inn (closed) and The Iron Horse Saloon (opened).

Mayfield was founded in 1802 by Captain John Mayfield and his family. The town was named for Colonel Robert Mayfield, who donated the land on which the community was built. The first store opened in 1804. By 1830, there were fifteen businesses in town and a population of over one thousand. In 1854, the Mayfields moved to what is now Louisville, Kentucky after purchasing land there from James Ketchum. The town experienced significant growth during the Civil War era. More than two hundred businesses were established in Mayfield between 1861 and 1865, contributing to its unparalleled commercial success during that time period. During the war, many soldiers resided in Mayfield before returning home to their families later on. After the war ended, business declined until a new generation of entrepreneurs took over in the 1920s and 1930s. However, economic decline again began around the turn of the century; however, it has since rebounded slightly thanks to development nearby such as shopping malls and an ongoing effort to attract manufacturing jobs throughout Southeast Kentucky. Today, much of what once characterizedMayfield as a small farming community remains today: Checkerboard homes are common along with gardens outside most homes; schools are located within walking distance of each other; and churches provide services such as worship service and Sunday school for residents nearby (albeit without access to public health facilities). A few notable exceptions have arisen recently: several large development projects have encroached upon old agricultural areas; nevertheless, most residents continue to rely heavily on agriculture as their mainstay formof income
