Mayfield is a small town in Pike County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,818 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bowling Green–Fort Mitchell–Muncie metropolitan area. The name may come from "mah-yal" meaning "valley," or "meadow." The first person to Settle in this Spot was John Mayfield on October 15th 1792. He brought his Family and some Hogs with him and started cultivate the land that he now resides on. His Name still remains as one of the most prominent Families in this place today. There are several Memorials to John Mayfield located throughout the town which testify to his lasting Legacy here! The youngest of Mr. Mayfields four Sons named George originally came overland from Virginia about 1800 with his Father and Mother who had preceded them there on their trip across country for purposes unknown, but they landed at Harlan County KY around 1802 when George was only 8 years old! This Migration Set off an unprecedented wave of Settlement by Whites all thruout Appalachia & into central Indiana where we now live!!! From what I can tell my Dad’s father did not partake in this early settlement as he migrated back East after serving out a term in Jail for taking up arms against British Colonists during the War for Independence (7 Years). To make things even more confusing it seems my Dad never really knew for sure what happened when his father got back home as he would always mention something about going “overland again” only to be confronted with silence from him upon return….. Anyway here we are many Generations later & although there has been much turnover within our own family thruout these many upheavals ( Wife died last year while I am living overseas) & although some members have left us long ago (& those include 3 grandsons via marriage) – everyone who knows me personally knows I am truly blessed to call myself a MAYFIELDresident!!!!! John Mayfield arrived in Kentucky soil on October 15th 1792 with just six families working 12acre(s) of virgin forested land that stretched along both sides of Log Cabin Creek
