Mayfield is a small town in Grant County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 2,918 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington–Fayette metropolitan area. The first people to live in Mayfield were Paleo-Indians who hunted and gathered plants and animal life near the present site of town. In 1814, prospectors discovered coal seams near what is now Mayfield and began to mine it. By 1830, the mines had produced enough coal to make a start on a town. The name "Mayfield" was chosen because of its location on the Cumberland River between Lebanon and Clarksville. A post office was established in 1832, and by 1840, there were about sixty residents in Mayfield. In 1861, Union soldiers burned down several buildings in Mayfield during their campaign against Confederate General Robert Ewell's forces northeast of Lexington. This event helped spur development around this site as business owners built new homes and businesses to replace those destroyed by war damage. When war ended in 1865, many of these new businesses became banks or other financial institutions that continue to operate today as local businesses. During World War II, Mayfield played an important role as one of six training centers for Army Air Forces pilots based at Lexington . After the war ended, most of the housing erected for these pilots became available for use by civilians; however some remains are still preserved as historic landmarks in town today. Today's community center was completed in 1984 after years of planning by then-Mayor Tom Hinton and his wife Peggy Hinton; they also donated $25 thousand towards its construction which has since become a national model for community funded projects
Mayfield was founded in 1785 by James Mayfield and his wife Rebecca. The first store opened in the present day building on Main Street in 1813. In 1830, the Mayfields sold their business to John Silliman. In 1865, Mayfield was purchased by J.C. Post and it continued to operate as a post office until 1886 when it was closed due to financial problems. The building that now houses the Kentucky Historical Commission remained vacant for many years until it was converted into an apartment complex in 1984. In 2006, the old Mayfield hotel burned down and has never been rebuilt.
