The town was founded in 1811 by Colonel John Mayfield and his family. The present courthouse was built in 1872 and is one of the oldest public buildings in Kentucky. The town was named after General John Boggs Mayfield, who fought on the Union side during the American Civil War. Mayfield was originally part of Bardstown Township but it merged into Pike County in 1907. As a result of its incorporation into Pike County, Mayfield lost some political power that it had Enjoyed within Bardstown Township. The economy of Mayfield is primarily based on agriculture with a small amount of manufacturing and services providing support for these industries. Mayfield is a town in Hardin County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,815 at the 2000 census. The name of the town was chosen by members of the Mayfield Baptist Church when they were looking for a name to represent their community. At first, the church considered naming their settlement "Meadow", but since there was already a settlement called Meadow in Hardin County, they decided on Mayfield as it suggested an agricultural community with rolling hills and gardens. The town's first post office was established in 1869. It continued to be open until 1912. In 1907, Mayfield became the county seat of Hardin County after its predecessor, Logstown (now Lebanon), was destroyed by fire. The courthouse and jail were also destroyed in that fire. In 1924, Mayfield married its first wife, Lula Jane Witherspoon-Logan from Louisville. They had two children before divorcing eight years later due to differences over custody of their children. The town has experienced many changes throughout its history; some are more visible than others. During World War II, Mayfield saw an influx of soldiers and civilians who participated in the war effort through work forces or volunteering; this created new businesses and industries which continued into the postwar period when hard times hit the area hardest. After other small towns around Kentucky went bankrupt during the Great Depression of 1930-1933, many residents moved out of Mayfields into smaller communities within Hardin County because there wasn't enough money available to maintain a large town likemay have been ideal for some people but not for others given that it lacked basic infrastructure such as water supplies or zoning regulations
Mayfield was founded in 1796 by Captain James Mayfield. The settlement was named for General John Mayfield, who had fought against the British in the American Revolution. In 1802, Colonel Isaac Usher erected a log cabin on the present site of Mayfield Institute. The first school in mayfield was organized in 1807 and taught by Reverend George Washington. A gristmill built in 1812 helped to support the town. In 1831, a post office was established at mayFIELD and remained in operation until 1840. In 1845, Nathaniel Lyon donated a tract of land to establish what is now known as Union University. The university became operational in 1850 and graduated its first class of students that year. From 1865 to 1870, Union University sponsored a fair that drew more than 100,000 people to MayFIELD. In 1909,Union University merged with Kentucky State College to form what is now Commonwealth Nazarene College; however, the college retained its name until it changed it back to Union University in 1978. In 1925,mayFIELDs first modern shopping center opened on Main Street which served as the town's commercial center for over thirty years including an indoor mall and numerous small businesses located within walking distance of each other on two levels: one featuring traditional country stores such as hardware and feedstores while the other featured high-end department stores such as Sears & Roebuck and JCPenney (now Macy's). In 1984,the original main street between Main Streetand Railroad Avenue was closed completely eliminated through resurfacing with asphalt creating an all-new shopping area which has since been variously called "The Mall" or "Mayfair". Today's main street feature several independent businesses including Weis Markets grocery store., Bed Bath & Beyond., Finish Line Sporting Goods., etc..
