Mayfield is a small town in Harrison County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington–Fayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. Mayfield was founded by Methodists in 1818 and has been a community since that time. The name "Mayfield" is derived from the word "meadow." The first settler in what is now Mayfield was John Patterson who arrived in 1814. Two years later, James Marshall came to live there and established a small farm on the present site of Main Street. In 1821, Reverend David Whitlock built his home on land that now comprises Fourth Street and Hubbard Avenue. A year later, he erected a log cabin known as "the White House" which served as the town's first courthouse until it burned down in 1825. Although parts of Mayfield were developed before then, its origins date back to when Methodists began worshiping here in 1818 under the leadership of Revs John Muhlenburg and David Whitlock. By 1830, there were more than 100 people living here; many of them were Methodist ministers who helped found schools and churches throughout this area. Over time certain areas of town became more populous while others gradually lost their congregations or dwindled away altogether due to lack of interest or disagreement among these early settlers about how best to administrate their new environment. However, despite this divergence in fortunes many active members still managed to keep alive contact with one another during these tough times- something that would be briefly tested during an intense local religious conflict known as the First Kentucky Religious War (1830-1832). In 1854, two young men named Elisha Prentice and Elijah Hicks moved into what is now Main Street together after hearing about an available plot of land east of town along US 65 which had been offered for sale but had not yet been taken up because no one had bought it! They soon realized that they had stumbled upon what would become their lifelong dream: To build a church here! Together they started construction on First Baptist Church which opened its doors for services on December 2nd, 1854- making it only the third church ever built inside MAYFIELD limits! Although they initially served just themselves and their immediate neighbors until additional space could be acquired elsewhere within weeks- eventually building grew enough so that BY THE TIME THEY TOOK UP THE BUILT LOT IN 1865 WERE SEEING OVER 4500 CHURCHES OF ALL shapes AND SIZES AGAIN!!! This rapid growth led to increased traffic congestion on main street (and other streets surrounding it) so much so that Revd David Whitlock recommended selling off some property adjacent to main street specifically for use as a public square wouldn't do anymore; henceforth mainstreet would be called Prospect Avenue! That same year saw also another milestone for MAYFIELD when students from nearby Transylvania University embarked on what would be their largest collegiate gathering ever when they hosted a large barbecue impromptu party at Pleasant View Cemetery mere feet from where THEIR FIRST SCHOOL WAS BUILT less than 2 YEARS EARLIER!! Moments later an even larger gathering occurred at Mount Zion Methodist Episcopal Church where over 10 000 students from across America assembled en masse!! Unfortunately such big events didn't last long due to bad weather conditions which caused several buildings within MAYFIELD primary school district including THAT VERY SCHOOL TO burn down!!! The following year (1817), Governor James K. Polk ordered General Andrew Jackson to march into Kentucky to end the slave trade there. On April 12, Jackson's army reached Mayfield; however, instead of arresting or freeing any slaves they found there, he dynamited the courthouse and burned down many homes in town.
