Mayfield, Kentucky is a small town located in the Pike County area of Kentucky. The population was 5,645 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous municipality in Pike County and one of its original townsites. When it was first settled, Mayfield was known as "Maiden's Peak." One example is that early residents were primarily farmers who grew wheat, corn, rye, oats, potatoes and other vegetables for their own consumption or sale within their homes or local markets. Mayfield was founded in 1796 by James Mayfield and his family. The city was named after General James Wilkinson, who led the British forces in the American Revolutionary War. The city became a part of the Union during the American Civil War and prospered as a manufacturing center. In 1912, Mayfield became the first town in Kentucky to be incorporated as a city. The population of Mayfield increased to over 100,000 by 1960, and it has remained an important community throughout its history.
