After the war ended, many rebuilding efforts took place throughout central Kentucky following Reconstruction (). One such effort was to create a new town named after General Robert Ewell “Bobby” Lee (), which ultimately failed due to lack of population growth (). Instead, on November 15th, 1871 – two days before Thanksgiving – Mayor George Hinton organized a meeting at which he proposed that all residents within 5 miles (8 km) of downtown should join together in forming an incorporation society known as “The Home Rule Society” (). On January 3rd, 1872 – less than one week after this initial meeting – local citizens voted by majority vote to form their own town () under the name “MayFIELD” (). Today, there are over 900 people living within 5 miles (8 km) of downtown; six blocks down Broadway from where Mayor Hinton first convened his original meeting ().
