In 1916, Mayfield was the site of a mass shooting that left nine people dead and thirteen wounded. The event is also known as the Gun Club Massacre. On December 14, 1934, three gunmen stormed into the Mayfield Rifle and Pistol Club, shot at customers and then took hostages before leaving with all three guns. Nine people were killed in the attack and thirteen were injured.
Mayfield, Kentucky is a small town in eastern Kentucky that is part of the Louisville metropolitan area. The population was 12,521 at the 2010 census. The Mayfield zip code is 62636. The town was founded in 1827 by Major General James Wilkinson and his family. The town developed around agrarian society that had large farms and outbuildings near the courthouse square. By 1830, the Wilkinson farmstead and several other small parcels of land had been combined to form what is now Mayfield. In 1840, Mayfield's first school was built on Meeting Street between Stone and Locust Streets. Mayfield experienced rapid growth in the mid-19th century due to its location as a transportation center for goods arriving from eastern Kentucky and southwestern Virginia. Beginning in 1868, MayFIELD became one of five towns within Jefferson County (now Greene County) which were organized as an independent county government under the newKY Constitution. During this time, businesses began opening up in downtown Mayfield and cable cars began serving the community from nearby Louisville beginning in 1875. In 1907, Elijah Parish opened his electric power plant on Sycamore Avenue just east of Main Street north of State Road 794; this marked the beginning of heavy industrial development in Mayfield which continues today with many operations located along Sycamore Avenue including Bluegrass Steel Works Inc., Hardee’s restaurant chain, Belknap Lumber Company, Apollo Glass Works Inc., PPG Plastics Corporation (later known as DuPont), Menard’s grocery store, Storrs Rubber Company (later known as Goodyear Tire & Rubber), Baker Tractor dealership/repair shop/radio showroom/laboratory/, etc.; all these are still open today! In 1915 another major industrial development occurred when J&L Radio Corporation announced plans to build their largest broadcasting station ever – WKCR – located northwest of downtown on Fourth Street across from High School! This brought about increased business activity throughout downtown which continues today with several restaurants and bars located on Market Street adjacent to WKCR studios! Inevitably during this period numerous local residents left or were forced out by expanding industry while others arrived seeking opportunities for better living conditions; however many key aspects such as social stability remained intact until after World War II when per capita income began to decline rapidly following mass migration from rural areas into larger cities throughout much of America resulting in declining population density both withinmayield itself and withinJefferson County overall
