Mayfield is a small town in Hardin County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. Mayfield is located on the southern edge of the Cabinet of Kentucky Mountains. The town is named for General David MAYFIELD who fought in the American Revolution and later served as Governor of Virginia. The first settlers in Mayfield were three families from Northumberland County, Kentucky: The Mayfields, Whitecaps, and Mullens. These families started out planting corn and other crops near their home farmstead on what is now Main Street. By 1820, they had built a log cabin several miles south of present-day Mayfield on an elevation known then as "Mountain Hill". In 1826, John MAYFIELD moved his family to this location and founded the town which he named after himself – David MAYFIELD Town. David MAYFIELD left his fortune to help support the town during its early years. He donated land for schools and churches; constructed roadways; laid out streets; repaired many of the community's buildings; and contributed cash (and more times goods) to help build homes and businesses throughouttown. Some locals still refer to today's downtown area as "David MAYFIELD Square" because it was here that he built most oftheoriginalmayfair residences – some dating back over 100 years! David MAYFIELD also helped establish one of America's earliest milk marketing districts in 1792 when he bought a part of Old Bridge Township in Hardin County for $1 per acre! This district became known as THE MILK DISTRICT OF AMERICA! Today’s farmers markets aroundthe country are directly attributable to DAVID MAYFIELD'S INVESTMENT IN MILKING PRODUCTS! In 1829-30, DAVID MAYFIELD purchased additional land east ofpresent-day Mayfield from James RUSSELL for $4 per acre which formed what is now called Russell Park District #2! This property became known as Russel Field District #3 which continuesto be used by local farmers today! Mayfield, Kentucky is a small town in the United States located in Leslie County, Kentucky. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville-Jefferson County, KY-IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settlers in Mayfield were two families from Maryland who homesteaded on the east side of Loch Lomond Creek in 1814. They named their land "Creekdale," but it wasn't until 1830 that they moved to their present location and began to cultivate what would become a large acreage of corn and beans for local markets. When America's first railway arrived in 1839, Mayfield residents were instrumental in helping build and maintain the line. The townspeople also became involved in many other aspects of early Notts County life - such as serving as school board members, county treasurer and justice of peace. In 1851, when Notts County was created from portions of Leslie and Hardin counties, Mayfield became one of its initial townships. During the heyday of railroads (the late 1800s through World War II), Mayfield experienced rapid development with numerous businesses opening up including a post office (1849), bank (1867), cotton gin (1879) and meat market (1903). Today's downtown contains several notable structures dating back to those years including Our Lady Of Mount Carmel Catholic Church which opened in 1903 and still features original stained glass windows; the old Mayfield Hotel which served as a meeting place for local leaders during prohibition; and the First Baptist Church which was built over an existing school building on Highland Avenue between 1918 and 1924. Although most conventional commerce has passed away within our walls since then - such as a tire store closed down last year - some residents have managed to keep alive traditional industries like flour milling or hand spinning while others are involved with technology startups like Covo Robotics Inc., founded by entrepreneur Michael Arrington in 2014.
Mayfield was founded in 1797 by Colonel John Mayfield. The town became a county seat in 1827 and was renamed Mayfield-Shire after the local post office. The name change came about because of the presence of Shire Farms, which had been established in 1825 by Judge James Shire.
