Mayfield is a small town in Clay County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,852 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington–Fayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Mayfields were first settled in 1786 by Captain John Mayfield and his wife Betsy. They moved to their present home on the east side of town in 1814. Captain Mayfield's son James became the first postmaster here in 1824 and served until 1850. The house where James lived now stands as a museum within the town limits. In 1872, General Elijah White donated land for a public school in what is now downtown Mayfield. Classes began on October 1, 1872 and continue to this day. In 1916, Mayor Jock Mahoning dedicated an Artesian well near Main Street to provide drinking water for residents of downtown Mayfield without having to go out into the community .
