Mayfield is a small community in Pike County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville metropolitan area. The name "Mayfield" was first given to the site by Colonel Robert Mayfield in 1815 while he was military commissioner for the circuit around that area. The town site was donated to the town by John Pemberton in 1840. A post office called Mayfield began operating in 1846, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1901. The town had a school starting in 1852 and ending in 1907; it also had a sawmill from 1868-1872 and an oil well from 1903-1907. A railroad station opened near present-day Mayfield on the Louisville& Nashville Railroad on December 12, 1906. The Community Association of Pike County (CACP) formed in 1961 to promote economic development within Mayfield and its surrounds. In 1984, CACP acquired land adjacent to current day's MAYFIELD High School campus for future development as an arts complex with theaters, restaurants, and other businesses including a golf course/conference center which never materialized due to budget cuts during Mayor Don Blankenship's administration; however this parcel still remains vacant today as part of CACP's efforts to revive what may have been once one of America's most promising communities).
