The Gun Store was also the first business to offer ammunition sales. In 1923, the town fathers decided to build a school on land that had been donated by Mr. Hays (a local rancher). It wasn’t until 1938 that the town fathers decided to build a school instead of just erecting an old barn because they felt schools would be more popular than guns in this community! Many residents inMayfield started using GUNS when they formed militia units or served during World War II due to high demand for these weapons throughout Louisville and Northern Kentucky (the war area). After the end of World War II there was again high demand for GUNS throughout Lexington so many people decided to move away fromMayfield altogether; however some members ofthe community still maintained contact with each other through GUNS meetings and events which continued until around 2000-2001 when most everyone left Mayfield altogether except some original Residents who remain today thru GunSafeUSA Incorporated which is based out of Lexington KY
