Gun protection history in Mayfield, Kentucky began with the establishment of gun stores and ranges in the early 1800s. By 1881, there were six gun stores operating in Mayfield. The first national rifle match was held at Fort Knox in 1892, and shotgun matches were also held at the fort. In 1916, the Mayfield Rifle Club was formed to help promote rifle shooting and hunting in the town. The club had a pistol range and provided instruction for residents on how to use firearms safely. In 1951, Mayfield became a city, and as such its police department became responsible for providing firearm protection services for citizens. As gun violence increased throughout Kentucky during the 1990s, Mayor Bob Hinton started working with local law enforcement to create ordinances that restricted handgun ownership within city limits. This effort led to an increase in gun theft from homes within city limits between 1992 and 1996. Since then, Mayor Hinton has continued working with law enforcement to keep guns out of hands of criminals and protect innocent bystanders who may be caught up in shootings. In 2003, Mayor Hinton passed a bill that created the Police Service Protection Unit (PSPU) to provide enhanced firearm protection services for officers on duty outside of City Limits. PSPU is now one of the largest municipal police departments in Kentucky dedicated solely to providing security for individuals using firearms while performing their duties inside or outside of City Limits

The first settlement in what is now Mayfield was made by Daniel Boone on December 12, 1800, when he and his party of sixrived from Transylvania to survey the lands that lay between that state and Virginia. The first settler in present day Mayfield was James White. He erected a cabin about 1812 on what is now Main Street. One of his children, Annisweeper, married John Stephenson around 1815-1816 and they had nine children together before she died in1875 unmarried (one son still lives). The original town meeting place was near where Zion Baptist Church stands today on Winchester Road just north of I-65 exit 134A. In 1821 the trustees voted to move the town hall to Cemetery Road which became its current location after passage of an act entitled "An Act To facilitate erection of a Town Hall in said Township". On December 3rd 1865 Rev Wm Hinton purchased the land east of Main Street from Jno Stephenson for $1=5 cents per acre which formed the nucleus forwhat would become MayfieldToday! A post office called "MayFIELD" opened November 17th 1865 under mail order auspices from Philadelphia with one letter per week being sent. Two years later it merged with PINEVILLE also via mail order into ONE MAYFIELD! “As early as 1800 Daniel Boone surveyed much of central Kentucky for future settlements including present day Mayfield’s location on Winchester Rd., just north of I-65 exit 134A." In 1840 James White built a log cabin on main street which became known as WHITE CABINET or GORDON HOUSE until it burned down around 1860 during prohibition era tremors while residents were outofdoors smoking cigars or pipes - leading some later to call this period "the dark days" ! In 1865 when one mayfield post office merged with another nearby; “PINEVILLE”; MAYFIELD obtained its own name!!! Present day MAYFIELD began as an unincorporated community located within Pike County line but has since grown rapidly annexing surrounding counties over time making it one world famous travel destination due mainly to its festivals and attractions!!

Mayfield was founded in 1792 by James Mayfield and his wife, Sarah. The first post office in the community was built in 1802, and the first store opened in 1804. In 1825, Mayfield became a town, and it became an unincorporated community in 1902. The population of Mayfield increased from 350 to 2,500 by 1880. By 1920, the population had shrunk to 100 people. However, the town continued to exist until it merged with Winchester on October 1, 1930. The combined population of both communities is now less than 100 people.
On Mayfield, Kentucky was founded in 1792 by John Patterson. The town was named for General Edmund Hardin Mayfield, who fought against the French in the American Revolution. The first store in town opened in 1827. In 1859, the population of Mayfield had grown to over 350 people and it became a village. In 1902, the name of the village was changed to Springfield after Representative James M. Sprague (D-Ky.) made a speech on Springfield's behalf at a national convention of Republicans. The village lost its charter in 1954 but continued to exist as an unincorporated community until 1984 when it merged into the larger city of Lexington.
